ATA Carnet: the “passport for goods”
An ATA Carnet is an international customs document that simplifies temporary export, import and transit. It suspends VAT and duties during temporary admission and replaces multiple customs forms with a single document. A carnet is valid for up to one year and can be used for an unlimited number of entries/exits in participating territories. It is for professional use (not private).
“ATA” combines French and English—Admission Temporaire / Temporary Admission—and the system is administered globally by the ICC World Chambers Federation under the ATA and Istanbul Conventions.
When should you use it?
Carnets cover three main purposes:

Professional equipment (e.g., photo/video gear, tools, musical instruments, stage props)
This saves time and paperwork at borders.
Not covered: consumables/disposables, give‑aways, goods intended for sale or permanent import.
Where is it accepted?
Only in countries/territories that have adopted the ATA/Istanbul Convention. Some countries accept only certain categories (e.g., professional equipment only), so always check local conditions.
Is the United States an ATA country? Yes—CBP accepts ATA Carnets, and USCIB is the U.S. guaranteeing association.
