TARIC & GN codes (EU commodity codes)

TARIC (Integrated Tariff of the European Union) is the EU’s integrated tariff database showing, for each product, all applicable tariff and trade measures (e.g., duties, preferences, anti‑dumping, suspensions, quotas, licensing). It enables uniform application of measures across all Member States and supports operators when importing into the EU. TARIC does not include national levies such as VAT or excise.

What is the GN (CN) code?

The GN/CN code (Combined Nomenclature) is the EU’s 8‑digit goods code built on the global HS 6‑digit level. The CN is updated annually and published in the EU Official Journal (the 2025 version applies from 1 January 2025 via Implementing Regulation (EU) 2024/2522). On customs declarations, the CN subheading determines duty rates and statistical treatment.

Relationship HS – GN – TARIC (levels of classification)

  • HS (6): global baseline by the World Customs Organization.

  • GN/CN (8): HS + 2 EU digits; used on import and export declarations in the EU.

  • TARIC (10): CN + 2 TARIC digits; used primarily for imports because EU measures attach at TARIC level. (Customs additional codes and national codes may also be required on declarations.)

Why correct classification matters

The right code determines duty rates, applicable trade defence or other policy measures, and required certificates/licences. Misclassification can cause back‑duties, penalties and delays.
