What is a Cargodoor?

A cargadoor brokers and manages the contractual relationship between carrier and shipper and, on the carrier’s behalf, handles operational arrangements for a port call; such as berth requests, loading/unloading planning, and the related documentation.

Core responsibilities

  • Contracts & bookings: arranging/aligning transport contracts between carrier and shipper.

  • Port handling: securing a berth, coordinating cargo operations, and liaising with terminals/authorities.

  • Documentation & formalities: preparing and managing ship/cargo paperwork and multi-party communication.

How it compares to other roles

  • Versus a freight forwarder: a forwarder manages end-to-end logistics on behalf of the shipper; a cargadoor represents the carrier and focuses on the ship’s port call and the carrier–shipper contract. (Synthesized from role descriptions.)

  • Synonyms/related terms: ship’s agent, shipbroker.

When to involve a cargadoor

  • For port calls requiring berth allocation, terminal coordination, and operational oversight.

  • When shipping with an ocean carrier and you need contractual and operational alignment around the vessel call.
